We've been at this for over a year now on Discord. It got me thinking; if you were to remake your character or perhaps make a new one, what advice would you give yourself? Now that you have been playing in the Chronicle for a while, you have that hindsight going and know what to expect from me as a Storyteller.
For me, I have always placed an emphasis on Lores and having both Politics and Occult represented.
Another thing is using Retainers effectively. Giving them the Thaumaturgy if you have that option, earning their free Level 1 Ritual with it. Also, Lores; substitute a special thing for a Merit and give them a Lore your character might find useful in the future.
How about you guys?
What are some character creation suggestions you might give new Players arriving to our Chronicle?

For me, the only stuff I would really be like well damn, I wish I'd have known, is that there are some things not to spend points on at all bc the ST will never ever make you roll it. *cough* Expression, if you don't have an ability that makes it necessary. So... check, if it seems kinda pointless, it might be kinda pointless. The next would be to be really sure you pay attention to which skills you give your Retainer both in terms of what they can do for you and what they can teach you and if you even want to learn their skills. Or, if you now you don't have the points on the front end to get the stuff you want where you want... get it on retainers if you can for cheaper on the front end so they can train you up in it later. Then would be look at what you're going to be wanting to build up first, and making sure you have appropriate starting dots to make that possible. Like if you know you want a Business, making sure you have or have a retainer that has the appropriate finance dice needed to do it, etc. ~Also, free pro tip: Figure out what perk you're wanting before you pitch it and you make Triple7 facepalm with your Answer

i would say first and foremost, pay close attention to your backgrounds because several of them can overlap for purposes if you plan it out properly. (Eg: Contacts overlaps with Influence and you can have those at character creation. Allies and Retainers can both be used as means to find teachers for abilities.)
Under the current rules, think long and hard before you make the purchase of Dominate 5 unless you intend to have a PC ghoul or you plan on using random mortals for scouting missions and you plan on just leaving them behind when they are no longer useful. Dominate 5 may be an unnecessary expense once you factor in the stat differences for an NPC Ghoul as it can be as weakening as it is useful.
And if you choose not to purchase Dominate 5, Dominate 4 becomes less important because one of the prime uses of Conditioning, is to prep vessels to be easier to posesss.

Don't put too much thought into all of it, have a plan, know how you plan to do what you want to do, but have a character you like. That you understand and that you enjoy playing as and that you can stick to.
Most importantly, a character that doesn't lock themself in a corner. Have motivation to get out and meet other kindred. Sometimes the best interactions have no roll equivilent and it's all roleplay.
The dots on my sheet have helped shape who the character is, but there was never a roll that earned my character anything or made him what he is now. Not status, not allies or influence, not disciplines, it was IC roleplay, and any character can do the same in their own way.
